Terry Alvey recently retired from Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where she served as the Instrumental Music Director at Walt Whitman High School. Over her 31-year teaching career, Ms. Alvey also held instrumental music positions at Tilden, North Bethesda, and Hoover Middle Schools. Under her leadership, the bands, orchestras, and jazz ensembles consistently earned superior ratings at District, State, and Regional Band and Orchestra Festivals.
Ms. Alvey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and pursued graduate studies at the University of Maryland and Trinity College. After relocating to the Washington, D.C. area, she worked as a freelance musician and joined the Monumental Brass Quintet, performing extensively in the metro area and touring the East Coast. Notable performances included the Kennedy Center, Lisner Auditorium, Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and the White House. For the past 25 years, Ms. Alvey has conducted the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble and has served as a guest conductor for honor bands and orchestras across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, including the Maryland All-State Junior Band.
Ms. Alvey has been a faculty member at the Levine School of Music, the DC Youth Orchestra, the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra, and the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra programs. She has also worked as an adjudicator and clinician for band and orchestra assessments throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.Currently, Ms. Alvey serves as the Music Director of the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra and performs with the M Street Brass Quintet, Delaware Symphonic Winds, and the Southern Delaware Orchestra.
She continues to enjoy an active musical career as an adjudicator, clinician, conductor, and performer. Ms. Alvey resides in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, with her dog Jennings, who graciously allows her to live in his house.
